New Video Shows Good Samaritan Stopping Attack on Deputy

The just-released video above is from the Florida State Attorney’s Office, supporting a judge’s ruling that a citizen who opened fire on a man attacking a Lee County deputy last year was justified in using deadly force. Watch the video below.

On Nov. 14, 2016, passerby Ashad Russell saw Edward Strother, 53, of Ocala, pin Deputy First Class Dean Bardes to the ground during a struggle on Exit 123 just off I-75 near Fort Myers. In the new video clips, Russell, who has a concealed weapons permit, can be seen walking up to the two with his pistol. He ordered Strother to stop.

The new video shows that Russell approached the fight, drew his firearm, which he legally possessed, and he ordered the suspect to stop what he was doing multiple times. When the suspect didn’t, the good samaritan shot three times, resulting in Strother’s death.

U.S. Law Shield of Florida Independent Program Attorney James Phillips analyzed the shooting after the event, saying, “Florida Statute 790.012 allows a person to use deadly force if he or she reasonably believes such force is needed to either prevent death or great bodily harm that is imminent to either himself or to another person, in this situation the officer.”

  1. Something must be terribly wrong here. A black man just saved a cop’s life. Black men are supposed to hate cops. The media said so. Kudos to Mr. Russell. Obviously a fine human being and American. I would love to shake his hand.

    • The perpetrator was also black. So here we have a black citizen shooting a black criminal to save a white LEO’s life. You cannot trust the Liberal media. Their agenda is to sow hate and distrust among Americans.

  2. The beginning of this article states that “a Judge’s ruling” Is it standard procedure for a situation like this to go before a judge or was Mr. Russell charged and a judge found his action justified?

  3. Ashad just saved the taxpayers of Florida 40K plus the justice system isn’t bogged down by some lawyer trying to get his innocent client off with a slap in the wrist

  4. Its about damn time people stand with the cops instead of against them! Thank God for people like Mr. Russell, and he should be praised not charged!

  5. Mr. Russell was just an ordinary citizen who did his duty and did so without hesitation. You are by definition, a hero, sir!

  6. I agree that Asad is a hero! Unfortunately there’s no mention of the civil liability Asad Russel has taken on. Unfortunately there are no laws that limit ones civil liabilities when acting lawfully as a good Samaritan. In all likelihood he saved the officers life, but will go bankrupt defending himself against the civil lawsuits brought by the bad guys family. I’m sure he will live to regret his decision to get involved. Unfortunately the way the legal system works the good guys get screwed in the end. Out current laws favor the bad guys.

  7. I’m pretty sure your good to go in Florida due to the one of the good things Jeb did while Gov. Castle doctrine for the most part removes certain rights from criminals and gives certain rights to victims or good Samaritans.

Hey Mike B, you are right to think that way sir. But if that were to happen in TEXAS! I assure you the only fight this man will ever have is how to SAY NO TO ALL THE DRINK OFFERS HE WILL BE RECIEVING. GOD BLESS TEXAS!!!

  9. Thank you Mr. Russell!! Also this message board sounds to me like a bunch of men and woman for the most part would do the same if they to were in Mr Russell’s shoes. It’s time we took back our streets.
