CZ 97BD Out of the Box and into the Match Review!

Our friend Patrick Kelley, who recently made his comeback to the professional shooting sports, is taking a short break from shooting his custom Savage MSR to give us a quick review of a new CZ 97BD handgun in .45 ACP. In case you’re new to Patrick’s particular style of gun review, Mr. Kelley takes a brand new gun—still in the box—gives it a quick clean and oil, and then takes it out to a Steel Challenge competition. These “Out of the Box and Into the Match” reviews show an honest representation of how these guns perform, so check out his review of the CZ 97BD:

Wow can that guy shoot! This episode is a little different as it features a custom shop CZ, not the typical stock gun that Patrick usually tries out. But, if you’re a big CZ fan wanting to know how good the firearms coming out of the CZ Custom Shop are, then this review is for you. That CZ CompTac drove some tacks during the match. As far as downsides go, Patrick had some failure-to-feeds during accuracy testing using Federal Gold Medal Match, which is notorious for being hard to chamber in picky guns. With a tightly fitted handgun, some pickiness is often expected. Patrick also stated that the double action pull was a bit heavier than he preferred, but he seemed to really enjoy the single action pull. Mr. Kelley didn’t shoot his best match with the CZ 97BD CompTac, but he usually shoots 9mm in competition, so shooting the heavy .45 ACP probably put him a little off target.

The CZ 97BD is chambered in .45 ACP, has a 10+1 round capacity, and features a decocker and night sights. It usually retails for around $750. This model is a little different, and is available at the CZ Custom Shop.

  1. My CZ97 is a single action customized by Cajun Gun Works and is by a good margin the best shooting 45mm gun I own, including several nicely worked 1911’s. If you want almost the perfect shooting 45mm hand gun let them do their magic. Custom shop is great as well, but nothing beats this CZ97 customized by CGW. I almost bought another it is so sweet to shoot. Either DA/SA or SA the CZ 97 is an incredible 45.

    • I just shot mine the first time today. It is so accurate I starting looking behind and to the side of me to make sure there is no sharp shooter shooting at my target.
